NL - Met een zinderend shot van een helikopterlanding, komen we aan bij een geïsoleerde Russische mijnwerkers gemeenschap in het besneeuwde Barentsburg. In de afgelopen jaren werden de mijn activiteiten steeds minder winstgevend, maar vanwege het geopolitieke en strategische belang van de Arctische archipel, wil Rusland er aanwezig blijven. ‘Outpost’ werpt een donkere blik op een samenleving die een terminale industriële fase lijkt te hebben bereikt, op weg naar totale uitputting.
EN - With a shimmering shot of a helicopter landing, we arrive in an isolated Russian community of miners in snowy Barentsburg. Even though mining has become less and less profitable in recent years, Russia is keen to maintain its presence because of the geopolitical and strategic importance of this Arctic archipelago. ‘Outpost’ offers a dark perspective on a community that seems to have arrived at a terminal stage of an industry, en route to total exhaustion.

NL - "In 'Where the condors fly' maakt de Chileense regisseur Carlos Klein een portret van de veelgeprezen Russische regisseur Victor Kossakovsky tijdens het draaien van zijn documentaire 'Vivan las antípodas'. Het is tevens een film waarin Carlos Klein — in confrontatie met zijn eigen creatieve crisis — op zoek gaat naar de roots van zijn passie voor het film maken. Het is beslist mijn fascinatie voor Kossakovsky’s films die me bij deze documentaire bracht. Anderzijds is het conflict met het crisis-element me ook geen nobele onbekende. Evenwel, om Kossakovsky te citeren: “Doubts are crucial for making art".
