Marine Hugonnier - Trilogy (2004-6, 56’) + László Nemes - ‘With A Little Patience’ (2007, 13’)
NL / Marine Hugonnier is een Frans-Britse filmmaker en kunstenaar. Ze onderzoekt hoe beelden worden gevormd en welke invloed dit heeft op onze perceptie, dit door aan de slag te gaan met film, fotografie, tekst, performance, installaties en beeldende kunst. Tijdens de ‘Visite Special’ toont ze het drieluik ‘Ariana’, ’The Last Tour’ en ‘Travelling Amazonia’. Hierin verkent ze de relatie tussen landschap en geschiedenis, om op verschillende manieren het idee van een “uitkijkpunt” te bekijken.
EN / Marine Hugonnier is a French-British filmmaker and artist. She researches how images are formed and how this influences our perception, she does this by working with film, photography, text, performance, installations and visual arts. During the 'Visite Special' she will show the triptych ‘Ariana’, ’The Last Tour’ and ‘Travelling Amazonia’. In these films she studies the relationship between landscape and history to explore the idea of the 'viewpoint' in different ways.
NL / ‘Ariana’ (2004, 19’) vertelt het verhaal van een filmploeg die de Pandjshêr-vallei bezoekt in Noord-Afghanistan. Een staat, waar het landschap heeft toegestaan dat de geschiedenis haar gang kon gaan. De film wordt het verhaal van een mislukt project, een reflectie over het 'panorama' als vorm van strategisch uitzicht, de camerabeweging, en zijn oorsprong als pre-cinematisch massa-entertainment.
EN / ‘Ariana’ (2004, 19’) tells the story of a film crew who visits the Pandjshêr Valley in the North of Afghanistan. A state, where the landscape has allowed history to follow its course. The film becomes the story of a failed project, a reflection on 'panorama' as a form of strategic view, camera movement and its origins as pre-cinematic mass entertainment.
NL / ‘The Last Tour’ (2004, 14’) is een fictieve actie die zich afspeelt aan het einde van het ‘Tijdperk Van Spektakel’. Wanneer toeristische attracties en natuurlijke sites door proactieve wetten worden gereguleerd, met gelimiteerde toegang voor bezoekers en beperkte uitzichten, waardoor deze bijna onzichtbaar worden. De toeschouwer begint aan zijn laatste tour: een ballonvaart over het iconische Matterhorn in de Zwitserse Alpen. Een verwijzing naar een wereld voor het tijdperk van de ontdekkingen.
EN / 'The Last Tour' (2004, 14’) is a fictional action that takes place at the end of the 'Era Of Spectacle'. When tourist attractions and natural sites are regulated by proactive laws, with limited access for visitors and restricted views, which turns them almost invisible. The viewer begins his final tour: a balloon ride over the iconic Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. A reference to a world before the era of big discoveries.
NL / ‘Travelling Amazonia’ (2006, 23’). Een 6000 mijl lange weg door het uitgestrekte Amazonewoud, die tussen oost en west, de Atlantische en Stille Oceaan zou verbinden. Het doel van de weg was om mensen zonder land te verenigen met een land zonder mensen. De Transamazonia was het grootste project van de militaire dictatuur. Deze film gaat over een poging om een lijn te trekken. Het opnieuw uitvoeren van het militaire project uit de jaren ‘70. De film richt zich op de processen en baanbrekende ideeën, die de overhand hadden in dit kolonialistische project, gerealiseerd tijdens de bloeitijd van Braziliaanse ambitie om "het land van de toekomst" te worden.
EN / 'Travelling Amazonia' (2006, 23’). A 6000-mile long road through the vast Amazon jungle that was to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean from east to west. The purpose of the road was to unite people without a country to a country without people. The Transamazonia was the largest project of the military dictatorship. This movie is about the attempt to draw a line. The re-implementation of the military project of the 70's. The film focusses on the processes and pioneering ideas, that had the prevailed in this colonialist project, realized during the heyday of the Brazilian ambition to become "the land of the future".

De film ‘With A Little Patience’ is bijzonder intens door zijn focus op één personage. In deze woordeloze, 11 minuten durende film, bestaande uit één take, verschijnt een anonieme kantoormedewerkster. Hoewel zij bij het openen van de film vrijwel direct in het kader verschijnt, is het eerste object dat in focus is, het object dat haar door een onbekend persoon wordt overhandigd: een broche. Het duurt even voordat we de betekenis van dit sieraad inzien. In de tussentijd krijgt de stilte een sfeer van mysterie en spanning die uiteindelijk met een enorme kracht, zelfs van veraf, wordt uiteengeslagen.

The film ‘With A Little Patience’ is particularly intense because of its focus on one character. This wordless, 11-minute long film, consists of one single take, in which an anonymous office clerk appears. Even though she appears in the frame almost immediately after the film has started, the first object that is in focus, is an object that is given to her by an unknown person: a brooch. It takes a while before we understand the significance of the ornament. In the meantime the silence becomes loaded with an atmosphere of mystery and tension which, finally, with an enormous power, even from far off, is smashed into pieces.
